Roller garage doors usually fail in a few predictable places: the curtain of slats, the guide rails, the barrel and its springs or motor, and the bottom rail, and most of these can be repaired without replacing the whole door. We repair manual and electric domestic roller doors across Liverpool and Merseyside.
Roller doors are popular because they take up no ceiling space and suit garages with short driveways. They work differently from up-and-over or sectional doors, so this page explains the parts and the faults specific to them.
How a roller garage door works
A roller door is a curtain of horizontal aluminium or steel slats that rolls up around a barrel in a box above the opening. The curtain runs in vertical guide rails on each side and finishes with a bottom rail, often with a rubber seal. Manual roller doors have springs inside the barrel to counterbalance the curtain. Electric versions have a tubular motor inside the barrel with built-in limit switches, and most have a safety edge or photocells. End plates at each side support the barrel and hold the bearings.
Common roller door problems
| Problem | Typical cause |
|---|---|
| Curtain jams part way | Damaged slat catching in the guide rail, debris in the rail, or misaligned rail |
| Door rolls up crooked | Slats shifted sideways, worn end caps, or barrel out of level |
| Slats dented or bowed | Vehicle impact, wind loading or an attempted forced entry |
| Door won't stay up (manual) | Weakened or broken barrel springs |
| Motor runs, door doesn't move | Coupling between motor and barrel failed |
| Door stops short or overruns | Limit switches in the tubular motor need resetting |
| Bottom rail scraping or gap at the floor | Worn seal, uneven floor or curtain dropped on one side |
Signs your roller door needs attention
- A grinding or scraping sound as the curtain moves through the rails.
- Visible gaps between slats, or slats sitting at an angle.
- The curtain bulging out of the guide rails in strong wind.
- Light showing around the edges when closed.
- Uneven winding, with the curtain building up more at one end of the barrel.
- For electric doors, the motor straining, slowing or cutting out.
How roller door repairs are carried out
- The engineer checks the curtain, guide rails, bottom rail and seals with the door closed.
- The door is run up and down to see where it catches or drifts.
- Damaged slats can often be replaced individually by sliding the curtain out of the rail and swapping sections.
- Guide rails are realigned, refixed or replaced if bent.
- For barrel issues, the curtain is supported while springs, bearings, end plates or the tubular motor are accessed.
- Limit switches are reset on electric doors and the safety devices tested.
Motor replacement inside the barrel is covered in more detail on our garage door motor repair page.
DIY or professional?
Some light maintenance is reasonable for a homeowner: keeping the guide rails clear of leaves and grit, wiping the rails, and checking the bottom seal. Anything involving the barrel, springs, motor or removing slats should be left to an engineer. The barrel holds the full weight of the curtain, and on manual doors the springs are under tension. Releasing them without the correct procedure can cause injury and damage the door.
What affects the cost
- How many slats are damaged and whether matching slats are available in the right profile and colour.
- Whether the problem is in the curtain and rails or in the barrel and motor.
- Manual versus electric operation.
- Door width and how easy the barrel box is to reach.
- Whether the door is insulated, which uses a different slat type.
- The time of the call-out.

Roller doors and the Merseyside climate
Roller doors are a popular replacement for old up-and-over doors on Merseyside houses, partly because they're well sealed against wind and rain. They can still suffer in exposed spots. Strong westerly winds off the Irish Sea can push the curtain against the guide rails, and salty air in coastal areas like New Brighton, Crosby and West Kirby can corrode fixings and bottom rails if the finish is damaged. A periodic check through garage door servicing helps catch problems early.
For any other door type, see our main page on getting a garage door fixed in Liverpool.
Roller garage doors versus commercial roller shutters
Domestic roller garage doors are lighter and usually insulated, while commercial roller shutters on shops and warehouses are built from heavier steel laths and often used many times a day. The repair principles are similar, but parts and motors are different. If you need help with a business premises, see roller shutter repair.
Frequently asked questions
Can a single damaged slat be replaced?
Often, yes. The curtain can usually be slid out and individual slats swapped, as long as matching slats are available for your door's profile.
Why does my roller door stop before it closes fully?
On electric doors, the limit switch may have drifted or the safety edge may be triggering. On any roller door, a damaged slat or obstruction in the guide rail can stop it.
Can I convert my manual roller door to electric?
Many manual roller doors can be fitted with a tubular motor, depending on the barrel size and door condition. The engineer will check suitability.
My roller door is noisy. Should I oil it?
Clean the guide rails first, as grit is often the cause. Avoid heavy grease in the rails, which attracts dirt. If the noise is from the barrel, ask an engineer to check it.
How do I open my electric roller door in a power cut?
Most have a manual override, often a crank handle or a release cord. Check your door's instructions, and if you're unsure, ask the engineer to show you on their visit.
Is it worth repairing an old roller door?
If the curtain, rails and box are in decent condition, repair is usually worthwhile. Heavily corroded or repeatedly damaged doors may be better replaced.
