If your garage door is stuck open, won't open with the car inside, or is hanging at an angle, an emergency call-out gets a local engineer to make it safe and, where possible, fix it on the same visit. Call us and a local engineer working across Liverpool and Merseyside will talk through the fault and arrange to attend.

An urgent fault is usually about one of three things: security (the house or contents are exposed), access (a vehicle or tools are trapped) or safety (a heavy door is unstable). This page explains what counts as an emergency, what you can safely do while you wait, and what the engineer will do on arrival.

What counts as a garage door emergency?

Not every fault needs a call-out tonight. A door that is noisy or slightly slow can wait for a normal booking. These situations are usually treated as urgent:

  • The door is stuck fully or partly open and the garage connects to the house or holds valuables.
  • The door won't open and your car is inside when you need it for work, a hospital appointment or a school run.
  • A spring has snapped with a loud bang and the door is suddenly very heavy or won't move.
  • A cable has come off its drum and one side of the door has dropped, leaving it crooked.
  • The door has been hit by a vehicle and panels or tracks are bent.
  • Someone has tried to force the door and the lock or frame is damaged.

If you are unsure, describe the problem when you ring and the engineer can tell you whether it needs immediate attention or can be booked in.

What to do before the engineer arrives

The most useful thing you can do is keep people away from the door and avoid making the fault worse.

  • Don't stand or let children or pets go under a door that is partly open or hanging unevenly.
  • Don't try to wind, release or refit a spring or cable. They hold a lot of stored energy and can cause serious injury.
  • If an electric door has stopped mid-way, don't keep pressing the remote. Repeated attempts can strip gears or burn out the motor.
  • If you need to secure the garage overnight, lock the internal door into the house and move valuables if you can do so safely.
  • Take a photo of the door, tracks and any loose parts. It helps the engineer bring the right parts.

A broken spring is one of the most common causes of an urgent call. Our page on garage door spring replacement explains why this is a job for a trained engineer only.

How an emergency call-out works

  1. You ring and describe the problem. Tell us the door type, whether it is manual or electric, and what happened.
  2. Price and timing are discussed. The engineer explains what the call-out and likely repair could involve and agrees a price with you before any work starts.
  3. The door is made safe. On arrival the first job is to stabilise the door, which may mean clamping it in the track or lowering it under control.
  4. Diagnosis. The engineer checks springs, cables, drums, rollers, tracks and, for electric doors, the motor and controls.
  5. Repair or temporary securing. Many faults can be fixed on the first visit where the parts are carried on the van. If a specific part needs ordering, the door can usually be secured until it arrives.

Common emergency faults and likely causes

What you seeLikely cause
Loud bang, then the door won't liftBroken torsion or tension spring
Door hanging lower on one sideSnapped or unwound lift cable
Door jumped out of its runnersRoller off the track, often after an impact or a cable failure
Electric door dead, lights on motor offPower supply, fuse, control board or motor fault
Door closes then reverses straight back upMisaligned or blocked safety photocell
Key turns but door won't releaseBroken lock mechanism or locking rods

A door that has come out of its runners needs careful handling. See garage door off track for more on what causes this.

What affects the cost of an urgent repair

There's no single price for an emergency job because the work varies so much. The main factors are:

  • Timing. Late evening, overnight, weekend and bank holiday call-outs are usually priced differently from daytime visits.
  • The fault. Re-fitting a cable is a different job from replacing a pair of springs or a motor.
  • Door type and size. Double-width, insulated sectional and large roller doors are heavier and may need two people.
  • Parts. Whether the right part is on the van or has to be sourced.
  • Access. Garages in rear entries or tight courts can take longer to work in.

The engineer gives you a price before starting. For a broader view, read our garage door repair cost guide.

Make safe now, repair properly later?

Sometimes the sensible option at night is to secure the door and come back in daylight with the exact part. That might mean locking an up-and-over door shut with a damaged spring, or disconnecting an electric operator and securing the door manually. It isn't a way of adding visits; it avoids rushed work on a heavy, tensioned door in poor light. The engineer will explain the options and you decide.

If the door is old, badly damaged or repeatedly failing, it can be worth asking whether a repair still makes sense. Our page on garage door replacement covers when a new door is the better choice.

Urgent garage door problems around Liverpool

Many emergency calls across Merseyside come from houses where the garage is integral or attached, so a door stuck open leaves the home itself less secure. Older up-and-over doors on interwar and post-war semis are prone to sudden spring failure after years of use, and damp, salty air near the Mersey and the Wirral coast speeds up corrosion on springs, cables and fixings. Cold snaps are another trigger, as metal parts that are already worn tend to fail when temperatures drop.

Whatever the door type, the call works the same way, and the engineers we work with cover garage door repairs in Liverpool and the surrounding boroughs.

Frequently asked questions

Can an emergency garage door repair be done at night?

Many local engineers take urgent calls outside normal hours, though availability varies. When you ring, the engineer will tell you when they can attend and agree the price for an out-of-hours visit before setting off.

My door is stuck open. Can it be secured even if it can't be fixed straight away?

Usually, yes. Engineers can often lower and lock a door, or clamp it shut, so the garage is secure until the replacement part is available. This depends on the door type and the damage.

Should I release the emergency cord on my electric door?

If the door is closed and level, using the manual release to get your car out is normally fine. If the door is partly open, crooked or a spring has broken, don't pull the release, because the door may drop suddenly.

Is it safe to use the door after a spring has snapped?

No. Without a working spring the door is far heavier than it should be and can fall. Leave it where it is and keep people clear until an engineer has made it safe.

Will I be told the cost before the engineer starts?

Yes. The engineer will explain the likely work and agree a price with you before any repair begins.

Do you cover emergencies on the Wirral and in Sefton?

Local engineers we work with cover Liverpool and wider Merseyside, including parts of the Wirral, Sefton and Knowsley. Give your postcode when you ring so we can arrange someone local.
