If your gate intercom has stopped buzzing visitors in, a keypad won't accept codes or fobs no longer open the gate, the fault is often in the access device, its wiring or its connection to the gate's control board rather than the gate itself. We repair and fit audio and video intercoms, keypads, fob and card readers, and GSM or app-based gate control.

These systems are common on private driveways and essential on apartment developments and business premises where many people need access.

Types of gate access control

Audio intercoms

A call panel at the gate connects to a handset inside the property. The visitor presses a button, you speak to them and release the gate from the handset.

Video intercoms

Adds a camera at the gate and a screen indoors so you can see who is there. Some systems record visitors or forward calls to a phone, which is handy if you are often out when parcels arrive.

Keypads

Users enter a code to open the gate. Codes can be changed and some keypads hold separate codes for different users.

Fobs and proximity cards

Very common on apartment blocks and business sites. Each user has a fob that can be deleted if lost, without changing everyone else's access.

GSM and app control

A GSM module uses a SIM card so authorised phone numbers can open the gate by calling it. Wi-Fi or app systems let you open the gate and grant access remotely, useful for deliveries or tradespeople.

Common intercom and access faults

FaultUsual causes
No call at the handsetDamaged cable, failed power supply, water in the call panel
Can talk but gate won't openRelay fault, wiring to the gate board, board input not set
Poor audio or cracklingMoisture in the panel, damaged speaker, interference on long cable runs
Video blank or blurryFailed camera, condensation behind the lens, cable fault

Fobs stopped workingReader fault, controller lost its user list, fob battery or damage

How intercom and access control repairs work

  1. Confirm the gate itself opens from its remote or the board's test button.
  2. Test power to the intercom or reader and check its connection to the gate board.
  3. Inspect panels for water ingress, vandalism and corrosion.
  4. Trace and repair cable faults, or replace the panel, handset, keypad or reader.
  5. Reprogramme codes, fobs or phone numbers and test every access method.

If the gate does not respond to anything, the issue may be the gate system rather than the access control; see electric gate repair.

Access control for apartments and businesses

Developments and commercial premises bring their own requirements: managing many users, removing access for people who move out or leave, letting delivery drivers in, and logging who has entered. Fob systems and multi-button or digital intercom panels are typical, often linked to a gate, a barrier or both. Managing agents usually want faults fixed quickly because a failed system affects every resident. Where vehicle access is via an arm, see car park barrier repair.

Upgrading an older system

Older wired audio intercoms can often be replaced with video or GSM units using some of the existing cabling, though that depends on the cable type and condition. Wireless intercoms avoid long cable runs but depend on a good signal between gate and house. Upgrades are usually straightforward if the gate's control board has spare inputs, which is worth checking during electric gate servicing.

What affects the cost?

  • The type of system: audio, video, keypad, fob or GSM.
  • Whether a part can be repaired or needs replacing.
  • Cable condition and the distance between gate and house.
  • The number of users, fobs or handsets to programme.
  • Compatibility with your gate's control board.

Weather and vandalism on Merseyside gate panels

Gate-mounted panels are exposed to rain driven in off the Irish Sea, especially in coastal areas like Crosby, Formby and the north Wirral. Water ingress is one of the most common causes of intercom failure. On commercial sites, vandal-resistant panels in stainless steel, with recessed buttons and protected cameras, are worth considering. We handle this work alongside our garage door specialists in Liverpool, and access devices are often fitted during gate automation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open my gate from my phone?

Yes, with a GSM module or a Wi-Fi app controller connected to the gate's control board. GSM works by calling the gate's SIM from an authorised number; app systems work over the internet and usually allow remote access and logs.

My intercom works but the gate won't open. What's wrong?

The intercom's release signal isn't reaching the gate or the board isn't acting on it. Common causes are a failed relay, a wiring fault between the intercom and the gate board, or a board input setting.

Can lost fobs be blocked?

On most fob systems, yes. Each fob has its own ID, so a lost one can be deleted from the controller without affecting other users.

Is a wireless intercom reliable?

It can be, provided the signal between gate and house is good. Thick walls, distance and interference can affect it. A wired system is usually more reliable where cabling is practical.

Do GSM gate openers need a SIM contract?

They need an active SIM card with a network that has good signal at the gate. Some people use a low-cost SIM; make sure it doesn't expire through lack of use.
