Most up-and-over garage door problems, such as a heavy door, a door that drops, jams half way or won't lock, can be fixed by replacing worn springs, cones, arms, rollers or locking parts rather than the whole door. We repair canopy and retractable up-and-over doors across Liverpool and Merseyside.

The single-panel up-and-over door is still the most common type on British houses. Knowing whether yours is a canopy or retractable design helps you describe the fault and understand the repair.

Canopy or retractable: which do you have?

A quick test: stand outside with the door open. If part of the door hangs over your head, it's a canopy door.

Typical up-and-over door faults

  • Door very heavy or won't stay open: worn or broken springs, or spring cones failing.
  • Door slams shut: springs weak or unevenly tensioned.
  • Jamming half way: a roller out of its track, a bent arm, or a pivot seized with rust.
  • Door grinding on the frame: frame twisted or door panel dropped on its hinges.
  • Won't lock or the handle spins: broken lock, snapped locking rods or worn latches.
  • Gaps around the edges: frame or door out of alignment, worn draught seals.
  • Panel dented: vehicle impact or weather damage.

Lock and handle faults are covered on our garage door lock repair page.

Signs it's time to get your door looked at

Older steel up-and-over doors often warn you before they fail. Listen for creaking or twanging from the springs, watch for the door dropping slightly when you let go of it at waist height, and look for rust streaks around the spring anchor points. If the door now needs two hands or a shove to open where it used to glide, the balance has gone and a spring is likely to fail soon.

How up-and-over repairs are done

  1. The engineer identifies the door type and manufacturer where possible, as spring sizes and parts vary between makes.
  2. The door is secured so it can't move unexpectedly.
  3. Springs, cones, cables, arms, pivots, rollers and tracks are inspected.
  4. Worn parts are replaced, springs usually as a matching pair.
  5. The frame is checked for square and secure fixings; loose frames are refixed.
  6. The door is balanced, the lock tested and moving parts lubricated.

Spring work is covered in depth on our spring replacement page, and should never be attempted as DIY.

Repair or replace an up-and-over door?

Up-and-over doors are simple and robust, so repairing one is often worthwhile even if it is many years old. It may be time to consider a replacement if the steel panel is rusted through at the bottom, the frame is rotten or badly distorted, the door has been heavily damaged, or parts for that particular model can no longer be found. Some homeowners also choose to switch to a roller or sectional door to gain driveway space. Our garage door replacement page explains the options.

What affects the cost

The price depends on the fault and the door. Spring and cone replacement on a canopy door differs from a retractable door needing new rollers and tracks. Other factors are whether the door is single or double width, timber or steel, whether parts for that make are available off the shelf, whether the frame needs refixing, and the timing of the visit. You'll get a price before work begins.

Up-and-over doors on Merseyside homes

A huge number of houses across Merseyside, from interwar semis in South Liverpool to post-war estates and garage blocks in Knowsley and the Wirral, still have steel or timber up-and-over doors. Many have been in place for decades and still work well with a new pair of springs. Timber doors can swell in wet weather and stick in the frame, while steel doors in exposed coastal spots tend to rust along the bottom edge first.

If your door is in a garage block or rear court with limited access, mention it when you ring. We can arrange an engineer for your garage door repair Liverpool job who is used to working in tight spaces. If you'd like to motorise the door at the same time, see garage door automation.

Frequently asked questions

Can an old up-and-over door still be repaired?

Usually, yes. Springs, cones, rollers and locks for most common doors are still available, and engineers can often source equivalents for older models.

Why has my up-and-over door become so heavy?

The springs are the most likely cause. Springs weaken with use and age, and if one breaks the door suddenly feels far heavier. Don't keep forcing it open.

Can I adjust the springs myself?

It's not recommended. The springs hold a lot of tension, and adjusting or removing them without proper tools can cause injury. Leave this to an engineer.

Can my up-and-over door be made electric?

Many can, with a suitable operator. Retractable doors are generally easier to automate, but some canopy doors can be fitted with the right kit. The door needs to be balanced first.

My timber up-and-over door sticks in wet weather. What can be done?

Timber swells with damp. The engineer can check clearances, adjust the door and frame, and advise on sealing or treating the timber.

Why is there a gap at the bottom of my door?

The frame may have moved, the door may have dropped on its pivots, or the floor may be uneven. The engineer can realign the door or fit a threshold seal.
