Gliderol roller garage doors can usually be repaired, whether they are manual or electric. We can send a local engineer in Liverpool or the wider Merseyside area who works on roller garage doors to work out what has gone wrong and give you a price before starting.
Gliderol is a roller door brand, and you will find its doors on everything from older single garages to newer homes where an electric roller door has replaced an up-and-over. Faults on manual doors are usually about balance and the curtain; on electric doors they are more often about the motor, controls or safety devices.
Manual and electric Gliderol doors
Gliderol roller doors broadly come in two forms, and the repair approach differs between them.
Manual roller doors
A manual roller door is lifted by hand, with springs inside or around the barrel helping to counterbalance the curtain. When those springs lose tension, the door becomes heavy to lift or will not stay up. Spring adjustment on a roller door must be done by an engineer, as the stored tension can cause injury if released unexpectedly.
Electric roller doors
On electric versions, a motor drives the barrel and controls the curtain's travel through limit settings. These doors usually have a remote control, a receiver, a safety edge on the bottom slat and sometimes photocells.
We use the Gliderol name only to describe the doors we help with; this site has no affiliation with Gliderol.
Problems we often hear about
- Manual door very heavy to lift – springs have weakened or a spring has broken.
- Door will not stay open – tension has dropped or the springs are unevenly set.
- Curtain rubbing or jamming – a guide rail has been knocked by a car or bin, or a slat has bent.
- Lock not engaging – worn lock or misaligned locking bar on manual doors.
- Electric door unresponsive – power, receiver, control board or motor fault.
- Electric door reversing on closing – safety edge or photocell issue.
If the curtain has come out of the guides, leave the door where it is and read our page on a garage door off track before doing anything else.
How a Gliderol repair is approached
- The engineer asks whether the door is manual or electric and what it is doing.
- For manual doors, they check the lift and whether the curtain holds its position partway up.
- They inspect the guide rails, slats, bottom rail and seal for damage.
- For electric doors, they test the power supply, switch, remotes, safety edge and motor.
- They look at the barrel, end plates and bearings inside the box if needed.
- You get the diagnosis and the price before any work goes ahead.

Parts availability for Gliderol doors
Common roller door parts such as guide rails, bottom seals, locks and many motors and remotes are usually obtainable, either as matching parts or compatible alternatives. Slats need the right profile and colour to match, so a replacement may need to be ordered once the engineer has measured them. On older doors, the original spring assembly or controls may no longer be sold, and the engineer may suggest a compatible replacement or a conversion.
Repair, upgrade or replace?
A manual Gliderol door in good condition is often worth repairing, and many can also be converted to electric operation; our page on garage door automation explains what that involves. Replacement is more likely to be suggested where the curtain is badly buckled across several slats, the guides are corroded through, or the barrel and springs have failed together on an old door. Garages in exposed spots around Formby, Hoylake or New Brighton can see faster wear on bottom rails and seals, so an engineer may suggest renewing those at the same time.
Getting help with a Gliderol door
When you call, it helps to say whether the door is manual or electric, roughly how old it is, and what happens when you try to open it. If the door is stuck open or shut, mention that too, as it may affect how quickly someone can come out. Use the number at the top of this page or the booking form. Frequently asked questions
Can you repair an old Gliderol roller door?
Usually. Rails, seals, locks and springs can often be matched or replaced with compatible parts. If an original part is no longer available, the engineer will explain the alternatives before quoting.
Why is my manual Gliderol door so hard to lift?
The springs that help counterbalance the curtain have probably lost tension or broken. Do not try to adjust them yourself; the tension can cause injury if released.
Can my manual Gliderol door be made electric?
Many manual roller doors can be converted, provided the curtain and guides are in good condition. The engineer will check the door first.
A car has dented the guide rail. Can it be fixed?
Often the rail can be straightened or replaced on its own, along with any damaged slats. It is best not to keep operating the door, as the curtain can be damaged further.
My electric Gliderol door stops halfway. What is wrong?
Common causes include a safety edge or photocell fault, a limit setting that has drifted, or the curtain catching in a guide. The engineer will test each in turn.
