Domestic roller shutters fit over windows and doors at home to add security, privacy and some extra shading and insulation, and we can send a local engineer to repair or fit them across Liverpool and Merseyside. Whether a window shutter has stopped responding to its switch or you are thinking about shutters for a back door or patio, the engineer can look at the options.
Home shutters are usually lighter than shop shutters, made from insulated aluminium slats with a tubular motor, but they have their own common faults.
Where home shutters are used
- Ground-floor windows on houses and flats, especially at the back or side where they are less overlooked.
- Patio, French and bi-fold doors, which are large areas of glass that can be a weak point.
- Back and side doors leading onto alleys, entries or rear lanes.
- Holiday or empty properties that are left unoccupied for periods.
- Garages, where a roller garage door does a similar job on a larger scale.
Roller garage doors are covered separately on the roller garage door repair page, as they have their own faults and parts.
Common problems with domestic shutters
| Problem | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Shutter does nothing when the switch is pressed | Failed switch, remote, receiver or motor |
| Stops part way and will not go further | Limit settings, ice or debris in the guides |
| Slats slipping or pulled out of line | Broken end clips or straps, wind damage |
| Noisy, rattling in the wind | Loose slats, worn guide brushes |
| Bottom slat not sitting on the sill | Limit drift, bent bottom profile |
| Manual strap or crank broken | Worn strap, failed gearbox |
Many of these are minor adjustments or part swaps. For motor-specific faults, see roller shutter motor repair.
Signs your home shutter needs a repair
Watch out for a shutter that moves more slowly, makes new grinding or clicking noises, no longer lines up when closed, or has gaps between slats. Remote controls that only work from close range may just need a battery, but if a new battery does not help, the receiver may be failing. A shutter that lets in light at the edges may have worn brushes in the guide rails.
In cold snaps, a shutter can freeze to the sill overnight. If it will not move on a frosty morning, avoid running the motor repeatedly against it; wait for it to thaw, or the motor and straps can be damaged. If it still will not move once the ice has gone, there is probably another fault that needs looking at.
How a domestic shutter repair works
- Call us or use the booking form, and tell us how many shutters you have, where they are and what is wrong.
- A visit is arranged at a time that suits you.
- The engineer checks the switch or remote, motor, limits, slats and guides.
- You are given a price before any work starts.
- The repair is carried out and the shutter tested from fully open to fully closed.
Many home shutter repairs can be completed in one visit where the part is on the van.
New shutters for your home
If you are thinking about fitting shutters, the engineer will look at whether they can sit neatly within the window reveal or need to be face fitted, how power will reach an electric shutter, and what colour suits the house. Insulated aluminium slats are common on homes because they are lighter and quieter than steel. More on the process is on the roller shutter installation page. If you already have manual shutters, converting them to electric may be possible.
It is worth checking whether your home is in a conservation area or is a listed building before adding shutters to the front elevation, as consent may be needed.
What affects the cost
- Whether the fault is a simple adjustment, a switch or a motor.
- The size of the window or door opening.
- Whether the shutter is face fitted or recessed, and how easy it is to reach, such as on an upper floor.
- For new shutters, the number of shutters, slat type, colour and operation.
Parts for older or less common shutter systems can take longer to source, which may affect both price and timing. The engineer will explain the price before going ahead.
Home security in Liverpool and Merseyside
Across Merseyside you will find shutters on terraced houses with rear entries, on ground-floor flats and on homes that back onto alleys or open land. Weather near the coast and the Mersey can lead to corrosion on fixings and dirt in the guides, so occasional cleaning helps. For any garage door problems at the same property, you can use the same number for getting a garage door fixed in Liverpool. You can also see the full roller shutter repair page for other types of shutter.
Frequently asked questions
Can roller shutters be fitted to any window?
Most windows and doors can take a shutter, either recessed into the reveal or fitted to the face of the wall. The engineer will check the space above the opening and how the shutter will be powered.
My shutter remote has stopped working. What should I do?
Try a new battery first. If that does not help, the remote may need re-pairing or the receiver may have failed, which an engineer can test.
Do domestic shutters help with insulation?
Insulated aluminium shutters can add a layer of protection against draughts and heat loss when closed, as well as improving security and privacy.
Can a single damaged slat be replaced?
Usually, yes, if a matching slat profile and colour are available. The engineer will check what is needed.
Do you also repair roller garage doors?
Yes. Roller garage doors are covered separately on the roller garage door repair page.
