CAME gate automation can usually be repaired, often by replacing a single failed part. We can arrange a local gate engineer in Liverpool or the surrounding area who works on CAME swing and sliding gate operators and barriers, finds the fault and gives you a price before starting work.

CAME equipment is common on residential driveway gates and on commercial and car park entrances. When it stops working, the cause tends to be a safety device, the control board, the operator or the gate hardware.

CAME systems engineers deal with

  • Swing gate operators – surface-mounted arm or ram types, and underground operators beneath the gate pivot.
  • Sliding gate operators – a motor with a drive gear running along a rack fixed to the gate.
  • Automatic barriers – used at car parks, business premises and private roads.
  • Accessories – control boards, receivers, remotes, keypads, photocells and safety edges.

Our page on gate automation explains how these systems fit together.

The CAME name is used only to describe the products we help with; this site has no affiliation with CAME.

Common CAME faults and what causes them

What the gate doesWhat usually causes it
No movement, no lightsPower supply, fuse or control board
Opens fine, refuses to closePhotocell blocked, misaligned or failed
Stops and reverses for no clear reasonObstacle detection, stiff hinges, safety edge
Remote works intermittentlyBattery, receiver aerial or interference
Sliding gate noisy or jumpingRack worn or loose, gate wheel or guide worn
Barrier boom drifting or not fully upBalance, limit setting or motor fault

Sliding gates also depend on a clear, level track. See sliding gate repair for the mechanical side.

What the engineer checks on a CAME gate

  1. Gets details of the gate type and the fault from you.
  2. Checks the supply and the control board, including any fault indicators and settings.
  3. Puts the operators into manual mode and checks the gate swings or slides freely.
  4. Tests the operators, limits and any encoders.
  5. Tests photocells, safety edges and the reversing function.
  6. Gives you the diagnosis and price before carrying on.

Safety after a repair

An automated gate needs working safety devices to protect people and vehicles. The engineer should confirm that photocells and safety edges react properly and that forces are set appropriately, with reference to EN 12453. If your gate has had safety devices bypassed or has never had them, an electric gate safety check is worth arranging.

Parts and whether to repair or replace

Remotes, photocells and many boards and operators for CAME systems can usually be obtained, or a compatible alternative fitted. Older control boards and operators can be harder to find, and the engineer may suggest a newer compatible board or operator while keeping the gate and existing wiring where possible. Full replacement is usually only needed if the operators have both reached the end of their life or the gate itself is damaged. Gates near the coast, for example in Southport or along the Wirral shore, can suffer more corrosion on racks, hinges and fixings.

If the motor is the main problem, see gate motor repair.

Arranging a CAME repair

When you phone, mention that the automation is CAME, whether the gate swings or slides or is a barrier, and what it is doing. Our homepage explains more about our garage door repair service across Liverpool, which also covers gate repairs like this one. You'll get a price before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions

Can you repair an old CAME gate?

In many cases, yes. Individual parts such as boards, photocells and operators can often be replaced. If a part is no longer available, the engineer will explain the compatible alternatives before quoting.

Why does my CAME gate stop halfway and reverse?

Usually the obstacle detection is reacting to resistance from stiff hinges, a worn wheel or a safety edge. The engineer will check the gate moves freely and adjust or repair as needed.

Can my CAME barrier be repaired?

Usually. Barrier faults are often down to balance, limit settings or the motor, all of which can be checked and repaired.

How do I open my CAME gate manually?

Most operators have a manual release, usually with a key. The engineer can show you how to use it safely.

Can I get replacement remotes for a CAME gate?

Yes. Compatible remotes can usually be coded to your receiver, and lost handsets removed.
