Most faults on BFT gate automation can be repaired. We can send a local gate engineer covering Liverpool and Merseyside who works on BFT swing and sliding gate motors and barriers, diagnoses what has gone wrong and agrees a price before starting.

BFT kits are found on domestic driveway gates and on commercial entrances. When a BFT gate stops working, the cause is often a safety device, a control panel setting, a worn motor component or a mechanical problem with the gate.

What BFT equipment covers

BFT makes automation for a range of gate types, including:

  • Swing gate operators, both surface-mounted arms and underground units.
  • Sliding gate motors driving a rack on the gate.
  • Automatic barriers for car parks and site entrances.
  • Control panels, receivers, remotes, photocells and other safety accessories.

Engineers will want to know which of these you have before attending. If you have a barrier rather than a gate, our page on car park barrier repair may be more relevant.

BFT is named on this page only to describe the products we help with, and this site has no affiliation with BFT.

Common BFT gate problems

  • Gate stops partway or reverses – obstacle detection triggered by a stiff gate, worn hinges or a force setting that needs adjusting.
  • Gate will not close – photocells blocked or misaligned, or a safety edge fault.
  • No response at all – power, fuse, control panel or receiver.
  • Remotes not working – flat batteries, lost coding or receiver failure. See gate intercom and access control for keypad and intercom issues.
  • Grinding or clicking from a motor – worn gears or an internal fault.
  • Underground motor sluggish – water in the foundation box or a worn motor.

Underground operators are particularly sensitive to drainage, and wet weather in Merseyside can leave foundation boxes flooded if drains are blocked.

How a BFT repair is approached

  1. The engineer gets a description of the fault and the type of installation.
  2. They check power and the control panel for error indications or incorrect settings.
  3. They release the motors and check the gate moves freely by hand.
  4. They test the operators, limit positions and any encoders or limit switches.
  5. They check photocells and safety edges and confirm the gate stops or reverses correctly.
  6. They explain the fault and the price before carrying out the repair.

Keeping a repaired gate safe

A repair should leave the gate working safely, not just moving. That means photocells and safety edges responding correctly and closing forces set appropriately, with reference to standards such as EN 12453. If safety devices on your BFT system have been disconnected or are not working, ask the engineer about an electric gate safety check.

Parts availability and repair versus replacement

Remotes, photocells and many control panels and operators for BFT systems are generally obtainable, or a compatible alternative can be fitted. Older control panels may no longer be made, and in that case a newer compatible panel can sometimes be fitted to work with the existing motors. Replacing the whole kit is usually only worthwhile if both motors have failed, the installation is very old, or the gate itself needs replacing. Regular electric gate servicing helps catch worn hinges and drifting settings before they cause a breakdown.

Getting a BFT gate looked at

When you call or use the booking form, mention that the system is BFT, the gate type, and what it is doing, including any lights or beeps from the control box. We also handle garage door repair Liverpool jobs, so say clearly that it is a gate and we can send an engineer who works on gate automation.

Frequently asked questions

Can you repair an old BFT gate system?

Often, yes. Many faults can be fixed by replacing an individual part such as a board, capacitor or photocell. If a part is no longer available, the engineer may suggest a compatible replacement that works with your existing motors.

Why does my BFT gate reverse before it closes?

The obstacle detection may be reacting to a stiff gate, a worn hinge or a force setting that needs adjusting. Photocells and safety edges can also cause this.

My BFT underground motor has stopped. Could it be water?

It is possible. Underground motors sit in foundation boxes that need to drain. If water has collected, the engineer will check the motor and the drainage.

Can I add more remotes to my BFT gate?

Usually. Compatible remotes can generally be coded to the existing receiver, and lost ones removed.
